Dr. Jan Schrooten
Dr.ir. Jan Schrooten is co-founder and managing director of Antleron (www.antleron.com), an R&D start-up that wants to revolutionise medicine by leading the development of next generation advanced therapies and medical devices. By merging the potential of cells, biomaterials, biologics, 3D printing and bioreactors Antleron accelerates the engineering of medicinal products, devices and processes that will change healthcare and result in a better life for all. The Antleron business philosophy is to create sustainable ventures through risk & reward sharing partnerships based on the adoption of its game changing team know-how and technology platforms. Jan Schrooten also initiated and coordinates the Regenerative Medicine Innovation Platform (RegMed, www.regmed.be), an open community across the regenerative medicine value chain to co-create a leading cross-border ecosystem that can drive regenerative medicine towards a real industry with clinical applications and a societal return. Previously Jan Schrooten was senior research manager at KU Leuven (Belgium), responsible for the long-term management and technology transfer of biomaterials and tissue engineering research. Trained as a materials engineer, with an engineering PhD in biomaterials and a postgraduate in business administration, he has 20+ years of research experience in biomaterials and tissue engineering. At KU Leuvenhe was also principal investigator of ‘Materials for Living Systems’ at the Department of MaterialsEngineering and group leader of the Tissue Engineering lab at the Skeletal Biology & Engineering Research Centre. He also co-founded and managed for 8 years Prometheus, the KU Leuven R&D division of Skeletal Tissue Engineering. Scientifically he focused on translational regenerative medicine, with special attention for tissue engineering applications. His work has been disseminated in 180+ peer reviewed international journal publications and conference proceedings (h-index of 33). He was (co)promotor of 15+ PhD researchers. He was a visiting research fellow at the University of New South Wales (Australia) and the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland). Jan Schrooten is editorial board member of ‘Tissue Engineering’ and reviewer for several journals and funding agencies. In addition, he co-edited the2nd edition of the Elsevier Academic Press ‘Tissue Engineering Handbook’. He contributed to the organisation of 15+ national and international conferences. As a young researcher he co- organised the Young Scientist Forum (YSF) at ESB and World Biomaterials conferences. Jan Schrooten is board member of Flanders.bio the cluster organisation for the life sciences sector in Flanders (www.flanders.bio) and was council member and translational coordinator of the European TERMIS chapter. Jan Schrooten is also co-founder and board member of the Bone4Kids charity fund (www.bone4kids.be).
