Prof. Alberto Saiani
University of Manchester, United Kingdom
Prof Alberto Saiani (AS) is currently Professor of Molecular Materials within the School of Materials having joined the University of Manchester in 2002. He was awarded a Euro-PhD in Polymer Science in 1997 (University Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, France), and then held a number of positions including a Japan Society for Promotion of Science Fellowship at Osaka University (1997-98), postdoctoral research positions at Imperial College London (1998-2000) and Huntsman Polyurethanes (2000) as well as a lectureship at the University Blaise Pascal, Clermont-Ferrand, France (2000-02). Since arriving in Manchester AS has developed a highly interdisciplinary research group having secured funding from public and private funding bodies. His group’s research-work spans a wide area of experimental polymer and biopolymer science and focuses on understanding the chemical architecture - thermodynamic - structure - physical property correlations in complex polymeric systems including polyurethanes elastomers and peptide hydrogels (www.polymersandpeptides.co.uk). In 2013 AS was awarded a 5-year EPSRC research fellowship to pursue his work on developing a technological platform for the design of peptide hydrogels for biomedical applications ranging from cell culture and tissue engineering to drug and cell delivery. In 2016 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and in 2014 he co-ounded PeptiGelDesign.Ltd (www.peptigeldesign.com), which develops and commercializes advanced gel-based combination products for the life science and biomedical sector.
