Prof. Matteo Santin
University of Brighton, United Kingdom
Prof Matteo Santin is Professor of Tissue Regeneration at the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences, University of Brighton, UK, Academic Lead for the Healthy Future, leader of both the Brighton Studies in Tissue-mimicry and Aided Regeneration (BrightSTAR) group and the Brighton Centre for Regenerative Medicine and Devices. His career in biomedical research and teaching spans over 25 years and it has been marked by significant achievements that were internationally recognised in 2005 by the European Society for Biomaterials who conferred him the Jean Leary Award. From 2008 to 2015 Prof. Santin was Associate Editor and later Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Medicine, the official journal of the European Society for Biomaterials of which is currently Emeritus Editor.
Prof Santin has been the President of the European Society for Biomaterials from September 2013 to September 2017 and vice-chair of the ETP on Nanomedicine, Regenerative Medicine Working Group. He is a member of various scientific advisory groups in the UK and across Europe. He is the founder and director of 2 start-up companies with a mission in biomaterials for biomedical applications and pre-clinical handling of cells, Brighton Wound Care Ltd and Tissue Click Ltd.
His scientific interests include natural biomaterials, synthetic biomimetic nano-structured biomaterials able to control tissue regeneration, and in vitro clinically-reflective models for the testing of biomaterials and tissue engineering constructs. He has published over 70 papers, filed 9 patents applications and unveiled for the first time the biochemical and cellular mechanisms of inflammatory response to silk fibroin, new cellular mechanisms leading to the failure of cardiovascular stents and the tissue regeneration potential of novel soybean-based biomaterials and biomimetic dendrons.
